Heart and Stroke
This organization is dedicated to raising funds for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research and promoting heart healthy lifestyle learning. They are at the forefront of investing in innovative research that saves lives. Their Mission statement is: As a trusted organization of committed volunteers and staff, we will increase heart health and reduce the burden of heart disease and stroke for the people of BC and Yukon. Twenty-five years ago an individual’s chances of surviving a heart attack or stroke were half of what they are today, precious time that your donations have helped to ‘buy’.
The Foundation’s fundraising program ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ was started 17 years ago and continues to teach kids about heart health as well as skipping skills. They also sponsor the HeartSmart Kids school programs, which are recommended by the Ministries of Health and Education. This program helps children learn healthy habits that will last their lifetimes. Traditionally thought of as a male disease, there is an urgent need to educate women. Many do not know that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of Canadian women, claiming over 40,000 lives each year. The foundation has programs to teach women about their risk factors for heart disease and the lifestyle choices that they could make to significantly affect their heart health outcomes.
