More Info

Adventures in Early Literacy sprung out of the Mother Goose program. Many parents and caregivers took notice of the benefits of the Mother Goose program and wanted a program that met the needs of preschool aged children and that continued to promote socialization and early literacy skills for children.

Each week is based on a different children’s story with age appropriate crafts, games, snacks & songs. During the session of the program, parents sit in a circle on the floor with their children, and are actively involved during craft and snack time in the kitchen. We begin with songs, then read a book, have a game, do crafts, have a snack, and end with songs once more.

All of the activities that take place in an AEL class can be done at home anytime with children, but are especially useful for those long rainy days. These classes provide ideas for parents to work creatively with their children while incorporating awareness of literacy skills. Older babies and children will often ask for their favorite songs and what is more, the songs and rhymes that are worked into an AEL class can be used anywhere and often help to calm an upset baby or child. The books we use in class can almost always be found at the local library, or perhaps in your own bookshelf. The games we use are also simple examples of how to engage with your child while reading through a book or after. Based on literacy skills, the games can encompass: sequencing, vocabulary, counting, recounting of characters, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and narrative skills. The crafts we make are again simple and can be done at home with minimal supplies, and often serve as another format for creative expression for children. Our snacks are theme based and we strongly aim for healthy choices, but do slide in a treat or two over the course of the program. Come and join our class, we’d love to have you!
